Cross and merge the barriers that exist between software development, testing and operations teams while keeping existing networks in mind as they design, plan and test.
Project management, best practices and workflows Tools such as JIRA, GITHub, AWS DevOps
Assist developers in troubleshooting: Applications
Migrations
Conversions
Deployments/publications
Additional skills beyond system administrator
Security roles:
Enforcing governance and best practices through security guardrails
Adhere to all State of Utah security definitions
Evaluate logs
Follow specific procedures and document for knowledge transfer
Work in conjunction with like-minded departments and closely with developers and other Devops personnel throughout the State of Utah to successfully deploy applications and ensure consistent and repeatable practices.
Collaborate with software developers, system operators and other IT staff members to manage code releases and cloud infrastructure.
Use leadership skills to team build and train others by being the example through showing self-motivation, professionalism and adaptability to change.
Devops will require additional skills beyond system administrator
Work with developers to understand workflows, identify resources, system requirements, create Infrastructure as Code (IaC) scripts to provision the resources, and create automated CI/CD pipelines, across all environments.
Work closely with Developers, Sys Admins, and Cloud Architects on best practices
Provision resources in cloud environments
Maintain and troubleshoot the health of applications and infrastructure
Build and maintain consistent environments
Manage the reliability of application infrastructure and environments, such as monitoring and identifying ways to make improvements
Ensure consistent and accurate billing
Work with Development Managers to provide accurate cost estimates
Enforce security governance and best practices in security guardrails
Develop, build, test, and maintain Cloud solutions by implementing reusable scripts and components
Translate technical and business requirements
Assist with all stages of testing
Participate in application strategic project-planning meetings
In addition to providing guidance and expertise on system options, risk, impact and costs vs. benefits, create and share operational requirements and development forecasts to allow for timely and accurate planning of projects.
Ensure environments meet state, agency, and regulatory policies and best practices
Help create requirements and procedures for implementing routine maintenance
Follow department change management processes
Disaster Recovery (DR) and Replication, including DBA in the planning process, as needed.
Assist in developing and preserving system knowledge, decisions, processes, etc. by maintaining documentation in a team area. This aids in training, passing on knowledge, and maintaining continuity in the eREP system.
Skills:
Must have scripting knowledge to build and maintain infrastructure as code (ex: Terraform, BASH, Cloud Formation, Python)
Experience with relational and NoSQL databases.
Knowledge of:
API's
Key management systems
Available cloud services/features
Networking and firewalls
Possess an associate-level cloud certification or be certified within one year from date initial cloud access
Understand various development methodologies
Required Skills Minimum of 5 years designing and maintaining technical infrastructure.
Experience with transitioning monolithic application to service oriented architectures
Enterprise Java experience
Familiar with building Docker containers and creating deployment pipelines for multiple environments
Preferred Skills Experience with RedHat (Linux)
