Position Summary / Objective:

KMS Solutions is seeking a highly motivated individual to join a team of engineers and technicians providing engineering and technical support to the Ranges, Engineering, and Analysis Department at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport RI. This multi-disciplinary team is responsible for providing systems safety, environmental qualification testing, and range sustainment in support of undersea warfare systems, including unmanned and autonomous systems. Candidates with education and experience in computer engineering/science and software development fields are highly desired.

Essential functions:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software tools and applications to support the marine species modeling team (MSMT) research, data processing, and acoustic modeling.
  • Manage and maintain Microsoft SQL Server databases, set up SQL Server instances, configure database settings, and manage server parameters to support large-scale environmental and biological acoustic datasets.
  • Develop and optimize stored procedures, views, and functions for querying and transforming oceanographic and species observation data. Monitor query performance, tuning slow queries, managing indexes, and optimizing database resources.
  • Manage user accounts, roles, and permissions to ensure secure access to data and applications adhering to organizational data management policies.
  • Perform routine database maintenance, capacity planning, and resolve database issues and incidents.
  • Implement backup strategies, schedule automated backups, and manage disaster recovery procedures.

Required education and experience:

  • Ability to obtain Secret DoD clearance
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Software Development, or a related field
  • Five (5) years proven experience in maintaining and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server environments, including performance tuning, backup/recovery strategies, and security management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage network infrastructure including firewalls, switches, VPNs, and Active Directory in a production environment.
  • Proficient in T-SQL scripting and stored procedure development.
  • Strong programming skills in C and/or Java and ability to work in Linux.

Preferred education and experience:

  • Active Secret DoD clearance
  • Master’s Degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math field
  • Ten (10) years of providing database and network support including SQL Servers.
  • Ten (10) years of software development experience
  • Five (5) years of NUWC Division Newport specific experience
  • Engineering and analytical experience with undersea sound impacts to undersea technologies


Competencies:

  • Capable of working and problem solving in both independent and team environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server (2016 and later), including SSIS, SSRS, and SQL Agent jobs.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.

Work authorization/security clearance requirements:

An active DoD Secret security clearance.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

The typical workday is eight hours in length. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, with concurrence from the supervisor. Attendance at prescheduled mandatory meetings is required. Must be available during the core work hours as determined by your contract/location and must account for the required number of hours in a pay period to maintain Full-time status.

Telework:

  • No regularly scheduled telework.

Travel:

  • Ability to travel CONUS; potential to travel OCONUS
  • Travel up to 10% may be required.
