The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The person hired for this position will build a data foundation that enables our digital transformation and application of AI for the Commercial Branding & Transportation (CB&T) Laboratory. The Data Engineer will be responsible for setting data standards, building and maintaining data pipelines and ensuring we have consistent, high-quality data ready for our AI use cases in R&D, manufacturing and the business.
Your role will involve assessing our current data landscape with an initial focus on standardizing data collection and migrating all data captured in the lab to a cloud platform. You will be responsible for building, testing and maintaining our data pipelines and data architecture, while ensuring we meet compliance, data governance and security standards.
The ideal candidate will perform well in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment and is able to manage multiple projects effectively while collaborating with personnel across the organization, to include manufacturing and other 3M labs.

Developing and maintaining data pipelines and the infrastructure to support the capture and ingestion of complex data into the cloud as the foundation to drive R&D effectiveness and manufacturing process improvement with AI and machine learning
Working closely with subject matter experts to gain knowledge of the data that is manually produced to create data standards and templates for consistent data collection and ingestion into the cloud
Building the required infrastructure to enable Data Science teams to easily extract, transform and load data from various sources for AI/ML and relevant software applications
Acting as internal advisor, data steward and expert for data architecture, serving as a strategic advisor to Digital Science management
Providing input to the Data Science and AI road map for the division, ensuring our data strategy is aligned with the identified projects and priorities
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, data science, software engineering, machine learning, operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, or physics (completed and verified prior to start)
Six (6) years of experience in Data Engineering, Software Engineering, AI/Machine Learning Engineer, or Data Science in a private, public, government or military environment
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
Master’s or Ph.D. degree in computer science, electrical engineering, data science, software engineering, machine learning, operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, or other field related to or utilizing data engineering from an accredited institution
AWS Data Engineering Certification, Google’s Certified Professional Data Engineer, IBM Certified Data Engineer or similar certification
Extensive industry experience in data engineering, deep learning, machine learning, natural language processing, data science, computer vision, artificial intelligence, statistics, and/or applied mathematics
Skills include an understanding of current data science/machine learning/AI/data analytics, current data engineering techniques:Experience applying theoretical models in an applied environmentExperience with a broad set of data science approaches and techniquesExperience with dashboard tools such as Shiny, Dash, PowerBI, or TableauExperience utilizing cloud tools to develop and deploy data pipelines and manage infrastructure.Experience ingesting large, complex, multi-dimensional datasets with a variety of toolsExperience using data warehousing solutionsExperience in with one of the following programming languages: Python, Scala, Java, C, C++Experience writing complex SQL, ability to use stored proceduresStrong fundamentals in problem solving, algorithm design, and complexity analysisStrong scientific and technical acumen, with demonstrated interest and ability to make connections between science/technology and real-world concernsStrong communication, technical writing and presentation skills
