As a  Controls Engineer  at our company, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the controls development to support our cutting-edge projects. This is a customer-facing role and will also be responsible for final acceptance testing with the customer.

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented  Controls Engineer  to join our dynamic team. The Controls Engineer will be responsible for architecture planning, programming, commissioning, and supporting electrical control panels, robots, PLCs, HMIs, servos, vision systems, and other components essential to produce our industrial machine automation solutions. This role requires a keen understanding of the design process, customer requirements, and a commitment to delivering the work product on time, on quality, and within budget. Ensures proper design documentation, process verification, and completes necessary data entry. May recommend multiple alternative design elements, and/or system designs.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
This position will be responsible for comprehending and meeting the controls design, engineering needs, and requirements of projects. The work requires attention to detail, managing multiple priorities and taking actions with minimal direction and includes but is not limited to the following:
·  Controls Design, Programming, Commissioning, and Support: Collaborate with company engineers, project managers, clients, other stakeholders, and outside developers to understand the requirements and scope of robotics and automation projects.
Envision and document the planned architecture for system designs.
Draft blueprints, sketches, or other documentation demonstrating proposed ideas and prototypes, and modify those designs based on feedback and simulation results
o Cradle to grave PLC controls design, programming, commissioning, and support of complex automation systems. Write programming for, configure, test, and debug robots and automation systems.
Install, operate, calibrate, program, and maintain robots.
Ensure that robotic machines operate safely, dependably, and with precision;identify and implement improvements.
Possess strong senses of urgency and ownership around business imperatives and help evangelize that urgency. Overcome obstacles to drive actions to closure.
Recommend, develop, and implement enhancements and improvements to increase production volume or precision in high-throughput automated operations.
Commissioning of systems in house and fielded at customer sites.
o Manage relationships with suppliers and leverage their resources effectively when support is required.
·  Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of designs, processes, programs, projects, contracts, and supplier communications.
Promote an honest and open environment in which information flows freely among all levels of the organization. Communicate design and project status early and often.
Generate reports on design activities and cost analysis. Provide action plans as needed.
·  Risk Management: Identify potential project risks and develop appropriate contingency plans.
Ensure all designs operate safely and exceed the minimum safety expectations of the company. We will not compromise on employee and client safety.
Stay updated on industry trends and market conditions.
Understand and apply company policies and procedures and applicable laws.
·  Cost Control: Continuously seek cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize design, build and test strategies.
Integrate and streamline processes throughout engineering and manufacturing to strive for maximum efficiency.
Perform project cost analysis when applicable.
·  Quality Assurance:
o Work closely with the rest of the engineering team to ensure projects and programming meets required performance standards, on time and on budget.
o Implement quality checks and audits to prevent defects.
o Assist in identifying root causes and developing solutions to improve current and future performance.
o Facilitates the resolution of supplier inbound Quality Issues in pertinent areas.
Basic Qualifications: Legal authorization to work in the USA is required.
Four-year engineering degree required, electrical or computer engineering preferred.
Deep understanding of electrical systems.
Strong understanding of microcontrollers (PLCs) and discrete I/O.
Proficient at reading IEC and JIC standardized electrical drawings.
Ability to understand technical documentation of unfamiliar hardware such as sensors, vision systems, networking, PLC’s, HMI’s, etc. To integrate them into the system.
Proficient in electrical computer-aided design and drafting software and programming.
Ability to be self-directing, manage time and priorities effectively, take initiative, exercise good judgment, and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
Excellent communication skills.
Excellent math, analytical, and problem-solving skills and a working knowledge of NEC, UL508A and NFPA79.
Ability to determine customer needs to develop project specifications and scope.
Proficient in project management, with a track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.
Demonstrated ability to drive change and improve processes to create a high energy high producing team environment.
Preferred Qualifications: 5+ years designing, programming (from the ground up), and commissioning PLC based automation systems.
5+ years programming with Allen Bradley controllers.
UL 508A MTR Qualification.
Experience with AutoCAD Electrical.
Previous experience programming and designing with FANUC and/or ABB robotics.
Previous automation experience in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, automotive, or industrial markets.
Previous experience in an Engineer to Order environment.
The full-time role is based in Zebulon, NC but travel - at times up to 25% - should be expected as needed.
