Backend Engineer As a Backend Engineer at Widewail, you'll help design, build, and maintain the services that power our user-facing products. You'll work on everything from greenfield features to improving existing systems, with a focus on delivering reliable, scalable, and maintainable code. This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll have space to solve problems creatively and the support of a collaborative, tight-knit team.
This is a hybrid role based in Burlington, VT. You'll ideally work from our office part of the week, with flexibility for focused work from home as needed, this is not a fully remote position at this time.
What you"ll do
Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that power our platform.
Develop new features and products in a greenfield environment.
Integrate with diverse third-party APIs and systems.
Own the deployment, monitoring, and ongoing performance of your code in production.
Collaborate closely with teammates on design, code reviews, and best practices.
Continuously look for ways to improve our architecture and processes.
Education
4+ years professional software development experience
Bachelors degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
Required Qualifications
3+ years of professional Java development experience.
Strong experience with the Spring Framework.
Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs.
Proficiency with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, Postgres).
Solid understanding of version control workflows (Git).
Experience working in a shared codebase on a collaborative engineering team.
Familiarity with automated testing tools and practices (JUnit, Mockito, etc.).
Self-driven and comfortable owning projects end to end.
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
Experience with AWS Lambda or other serverless technologies.
Prior work in an early-stage or growth-stage company.
Exposure to Kotlin.
