Filtration Lab Applications Engineer The FILTR Lab Applications Engineer will report to the Lab Director and will be based in Beverly, Massachusetts. The Applications Engineer will have a strong knowledge of filtration process technologies used in the markets of Food and Beverage, Chemicals, and water treatment as well as various types of filtration media and formats. This role involves characterizing filtration processes and performance using standard and custom filtration screening processes, analytical methods, with model and customer specific liquid feed streams. An Applications Engineer with strong foundations and hands on experience in liquid filtration, fluid dynamics, design of experiments, project management, and data analysis & interpretation would be the ideal candidate. Responsibilities Lead and support laboratory experimentation to characterize filtration media or filters up to 10-inch cartridge scale to understand and predict their performance in liquid filtration. Design, setup, maintain, and operate liquid process normal flow filtration testing equipment at a Lab Scale using model and customer specific liquid feed streams at either constant pressure or constant flow. Characterize filtration media (membranes, non-wovens) using various analytical and characterization techniques, including porometry, flow and pressure characteristics, and filtration/retention properties. Operate and maintain laboratory scientific instruments, including a particle sizer, spectroscopy, and other chemistry or materials instrumentation. Perform filter retention experiments involving Biosafety Level 1 (BSL1) micro-organisms. Develop and optimize testing methodologies in accordance with ISO17025 guidelines to ensure accurate and reliable results. Prepare detailed reports and documentation that meet ISO17025 standards for product validation studies, including protocol development and execution (IQ/OQ/PQ). Lead or assist in the Quality Management duties of an ISO17025 accredited laboratory, including QMS software, audits, investigations, corrective actions, etc. Collect, analyze, and record data accurately in laboratory notebooks and databases. Participate in team meetings and contribute to data analysis, project reports, validation guide, customer facing technical briefs and external presentations. Contribute to new product development projects in collaboration with a diverse team, including manufacturing, product management, and sales. Adhere to all safety rules, including the wearing of PPE (personal protective equipment). Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical or related field is required; or in absence of degree, four (4) years of related experience in an applications engineering, or scientist role is required. Three (3) years of experience in a research or laboratory setting is preferred; prior experience with direct applications in filtration is highly preferred. Demonstrated experience in fluid and liquid engineering is preferred. Must have hands-on skills and the ability to perform liquid filtration performance experiments under constant flow or constant pressure. Ideal candidate will have experience with standard laboratory equipment and analytical instruments relevant to characterizing polymeric porous media, including membranes and non-woven media. Ability to author Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Documentation. Prior experience working in an ISO/GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) quality environment is preferred. Experience with instrumentation maintenance is preferred. Prior experience with project management and leading technicians is preferred, but not required. Proficient with Microsoft Office products and statistical software is preferred; proficiency with Minitab is preferred, but not required. Willingness to work side-by-side with all levels of the team.
